Hi neighbors!

I’m Prita Piekara and I am honored to serve as your elected Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for the 2023 - 2024 term.

Here’s a little about me and I look forward to learning more about you!

I come from an international family with my parents growing up in India and Nigeria before immigrating to Northern California. For more than 17 years, DC has been my home - the home that I love for its diversity of people, rich history, and beauty. DC is the home that I chose and Brookland is the community where I’m excited to be a part of and raise my family.

I married my best friend, Evan, at the Saint Francis Monastery in Brookland and it was driving back and forth through Brookland for wedding preparations that we became smitten with this community. Looking down every beautiful, tree-lined street, we saw children playing, neighbors catching up and families laughing on the porch  - we knew Brookland was the community that we wanted to be a part of.

Evan and I are beyond thankful that we get to call Brookland our home and that we get to raise our daughter, Anaiya, in such a warm and caring community. Anaiya, which means “she who brings the sunshine” in Sanskrit, is a rambunctious three-year old who loves chasing her dog, Drogo, around the yard, singing Happy Birthday at the top of her lungs, and chatting with neighbors. Like her mother, Anaiya also has a penchant for yelling at speeding cars to “Slow down!”

When I’m not chasing down a toddler or bugging DDOT for speed humps, I spend my day leading the Corporate Social Responsibility function for a harm reduction company. Prior to that, I was the Director of Strategic Impact at Spitfire Strategies, overseeing the firm’s partnerships function and working closely with philanthropic leaders on a number of social and racial justice initiatives. Before joining Spitfire Strategies, I spent 8 years developing alliances and supporting government affairs for a biotechnology company. Bettering our community has always been something that is important to me and I’ve devoted time to congressional campaigns, organizations and community groups. I currently service on the board of Running Start, an organization committed to encouraging and training young women to run for office, and have formerly held Executive Board and Advisory Board positions with the Women’s Information Network, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF), Asian American Action Fund (AAAF) , Desis for Progress, South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT) and NationSwell.

I am honored and absolutely love serving our community here in Brookland. Being ANC has allowed me to get to know even more of our wonderful neighbors and help cultivate the sense of community that I think is really at the heart of what makes Brookland such a special place.

As your ANC commissioner, I am here to support you. My goals are to better our community by working together to prioritize safe streets for all, ensure support for the most vulnerable in our community, help our neighbors age in place, support efforts to reduce gun violence, and ensure that everyone in our community has a voice and feels represented.

If there is anything I can do to support you and your family, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I am available by cell at 202-695-1147 or email at 5B06@ANC.DC.GOV. I look forward to bettering our community together!
